14 of 15 GRCs contested on Nomination Day

SINGAPORE: All Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) except Tanjong Pagar will be contested in the coming polls.

The PAP team in the Tanjong Pagar GRC, led by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, was returned unopposed on Nomination Day on Wednesday.

The other 14 GRCs will square off the opposition in the May 7 General Election.

In Tampines GRC, it's going to be a straight fight between the PAP and the National Solidarity Party (NSP).

The PAP team is helmed by National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan. He is joined by Minister of State Masagos Zulkifli, incumbent Irene Ng, Mr Baey Yam Keng and new candidate Heng Swee Keat.

For Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, another straight fight is set between the PAP team led by Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) team helmed by social worker Dr Vincent Wijeysingha.

The SDP had raised an objection to the candidacy of Sim Ann.

But the returning officer had over-ruled the objection.

At Chua Chu Kang GRC, there will be a straight fight between the PAP and the NSP.

At East Coast GRC, the contest is between the PAP and the Workers' Party (WP).

At Sembawang GRC, it's a straight fight between the PAP team led by Minister Khaw Boon Wan, and the SDP team.

In Nee Soon, the tussle is between the PAP team led by Mr K Shanmugam and a WP team.

Over at Marine Parade, it's the PAP team led by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong versus the NSP team.

For Jurong , the PAP team led by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is facing off the NSP.

For Moulmein-Kallang, the PAP team led by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim is up against the WP.

At West Coast, Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang is leading his team against the Reform Party led by its secretary general Kenneth Jeyaretnam.

For Ang Mo Kio GRC, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is leading his team against another Reform Party team.

For Aljunied GRC, the contest is between the PAP team led by Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo versus the WP team led by its secretary general Low Thia Khiang.

The others in the WP team are party chairman Sylvia Lim, corporate lawyer Chen Show Mao, Pritam Singh, a postgraduate law student, and Muhamad Faisal Manap, a freelance counseller.

Mr Yeo said as expected the Workers' Party has fielded a strong team in the constituency and described them as worthy opponents. He pledged to fight to win hearts and minds of residents in Aljunied.

At Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, it's a straight fight between the PAP team led by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng and the Singapore People's Party (SPP) led by party chief Chiam See Tong.

For Pasir Ris-Punggol, it's the PAP team led by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean against the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA).
