In Tampines GRC, it's going to be a straight fight between the PAP and the National Solidarity Party (NSP).

The PAP team is helmed by National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan. He is joined by Minister of State Masagos Zulkifli, incumbent Irene Ng, Mr Baey Yam Keng and new candidate Heng Swee Keat.

For Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, another straight fight is set between the PAP team led by Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) team helmed by social worker Dr Vincent Wijeysingha.

The SDP had raised an objection to the candidacy of Sim Ann.

SINGAPORE: Eleven of the 12 contested single-member constituencies (SMCs) will see straight fights between the PAP and the opposition parties in the May 7 General Election.

Only Punggol East SMC will see a three-cornered fight.

This will be between PAP's Michael Palmer, Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian and Singapore Democratic Alliance's (SDA) Desmond Lim.

For Joo Chiat, it is a straight fight between PAP's Charles Chong and the Workers' Party's Yee Jenn Jong.

Mr Chong's nomination forms were cleared, after the Workers' Party had earlier raised an objection over pen marks next to the name of an assentor on his forms.

In Bukit Panjang SMC, it is a straight fight between PAP's Dr Teo Ho Pin and Mr Alec Tok from the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

For Hong Kah North SMC, the contest is down to PAP's Dr Amy Khor and Singapore People's Party's chairman Mr Sin Kek Tong.

For Hougang, it is another straight fight between PAP's Desmond Choo and the Workers' Party's Yaw Shin Leong.

In Radin Mas, PAP's Sam Tan will face off National Solidarity Party's Yip Yew Weng.

In Whampoa, it's PAP's Heng Chee How versus NSP candidate Ken Sun.

For Mountbatten SMC, it's down to the PAP's Lim Biow Chuan and the NSP's Jeannette Chong Aruldoss. Independent candidate Boon Suan Ban, who was also aiming to stand in Mountbatten, dropped out as he could not find his assentors.

In Pioneer SMC, PAP's Cedric Foo will square off NSP's Steve Chia.

At Sengkang West SMC, it's PAP's Lam Pin Min versus the Workers' Party's Koh Choon Yong. Ooi Boon Ewe of the People's Liberal Democratic Party was supposed to stand as a candidate in Sengkang West but dropped out as he could not find an assentor.

At Yuhua, the fight is between PAP's Senior Minister of State Grace Fu and Singapore Democratic Party's Teo Soh Lung, a retired lawyer and former Internal Security Act detainee.

At Potong Pasir, the tussle is between PAP's Sitoh Yih Pin against Singapore People's Party's Lina Chiam, the wife of veteran opposition politician Chiam See Tong.

GE: 82 of 87 seats contested

GE: 82 of 87 seats contested
Posted: 27 April 2011 1221 hrs

SINGAPORE: The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) was not returned to government on Wednesday, on Nomination Day in Singapore.

Eighty-two out of the 87 seats will be contested, making it the biggest battle at the polls for the party since Singapore's independence.

At a news conference held after Nomination Day , Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong reminded voters what is at stake - their future and that of future generations of Singaporeans.

The day started with a surprise when the Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang, who is one of only two elected Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) in the last Parliament, turned up at the Nomination Centre for Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

Just past 12.30pm, there was confirmation Mr Low indeed left his single seat stronghold of Hougang to contest in a GRC.

Mr Low had held that ward for 20 years since 1991.

The team there has been dubbed the "A" team of the party and includes WP chairman Sylvia Lim and lawyer Chen Show Mao.

The other team members are post-graduate law student Pritam Singh and Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap.

It faces the incumbent PAP team, made up of three office holders - Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zainal Abidin Rasheed and Second Minister for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua.

The others are Cynthia Phua and new face Ong Ye Kung.

Aljunied saw fierce battle in 2006 with WP clinching about 44 per cent of valid votes.

That is set for a replay this elections.

Mr Yeo said: "As we have expected, the Workers' Party has fielded a strong team.

"They are worthy opponents but we will fight to win over every heart and every mind in Aljunied GRC.

In the last five years what we promised we will do, we have done. We hope we have earned your trust.

"For the future we have detailed plans to help residents under the Aljunied 10 programme. Give us your support. This is a decisive contest especially for the people of Aljunied GRC. Give us your full support."

Mr Low said: "The ground is pretty sweet to us"

The only constituency which has a walkover - Tanjong Pagar, led by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew - saw a bit of drama at the Nomination Centre.

At the eleventh hour, a team of independents, led by Ng Teck Siong and Nazem Suki turned up - but according to officials, they failed to submit their papers by the deadline.

Word then got around that the team was disqualified.

The team said it may appeal the decision.)

The last time the area was contested was as a single member ward in 1988.

In MM Lee's thank you speech to supporters, he said his area has not been contested since 1991 and he actually would have welcomed one.

"This last attempt to put a contest was put beyond the time of limit and everybody knows you have to put the papers by 12 o'clock," he said.

"So it's a feeble effort to show they wanted to contest. I would have welcomed a contest in Tanjong Pagar because I've worked there since 1955 and you have seen how Tanjong Pagar has changed.

"Indeed, the whole of Singapore has changed since 1959 when I became the first Prime Minister."

Another surprise on Nomination Day related to Tanjong Pager was a new face introduced earlier as part of the PAP team, Steve Tan announced he was dropping out for "personal reasons".

Hence, a reshuffling of PAP candidates took place: Former MP for Tanjong Pagar Baey Yam Keng was moved to Tampines GRC.

Meanwhile, a new face, 40-year-old Chia Shi Lu, an orthopedic surgeon, will now become an MP, given that Tanjong Pagar is uncontested.

Despite expectations of multi cornered fights, there will only be one three-cornered fight for Punggol East Single-Member Constituency (SMC).

Over the next 10 days, campaigning will go into full swing with rallies likely to be held every night.

SingTel successfully launches satellite ST-2 - Channel NewsAsia

SingTel successfully launches satellite ST-2
Posted: 21 May 2011 1614 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) has successfully launched Singapore's second commercial satellite, ST-2, into orbit following an impressive lift-off from Kourou, French Guiana.

At 4.38am Singapore time, the Ariane 5 ECA rocket rose from its launch pad, safely entering transfer orbit 250 kilometres above the earth.

Separation from the rocket occurred 27 minutes after lift-off.

Primary school pupils were invited by SingTel to witness the launch at the Seletar Satellite Earth Station.

Ms Chua Sock Koong, Group Chief Executive Officer of SingTel, said this is an exciting milestone for SingTel and Singapore.

She said satellite services play an important role in SingTel's overall vision for the Corporate Business market, enabling it to lead and shape key markets such as the maritime, oil and gas, media and broadcast, as well as logistics industries.

ST-2 - which is almost twice as powerful as ST-1, SingTel's first satellite - will help the company to meet growing customer demand for fixed and mobile satellite services.

ST-1, which was launched in 1998, will initially complement, and later be replaced by ST-2.

The new satellite, which was built by Melco, is a joint venture between SingTel and Chunghwa Telecom. It will provide 20 per cent more transponder capacity and a wider coverage footprint than ST-1.

SingTel has approximately 62 per cent share in the joint venture, while Chunghwa Telecom owns the remaining 38 per cent.

ST-2 will have a wide-ranging footprint of C-band and Ku-band coverage that will cover the Middle East, Central Asia, Indian sub-continent and South East Asia.

Apart from its high powered beams, it will also offer excellent switching capabilities to provide flexibility in meeting the demand required by different regions.
