Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2009.

This morning is Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2009. Inaugural event. Something new as can be seen from the title. You got a chance to run in Singapore maximum security prison compound.

Woke up at 0510 hrs. Did the normal preparation. Give Kok Meng a call at 0540 hrs.Bought my fuel belt without any water bottle since the distance is only 10km. Left home at 0545 hrs. Drove to Bishan and picked up Kok Meng at 0605 hrs. Go via CTE -> PIE and exit at Simei ave to Expo carpark. Reach Expo carpark at around 0630 hrs. Shuttle bus will bring us to the starting point, Changi Village. Starting point and ending point is far from each other.

Took the shuttle bus and it brought us to Changi Village bus interchange. Walk to the starting point which is the big SAF field at Farnborough Road, about 5 minutes walk. Flag off time is 0730 hrs. Only managed to see Rama at the starting point, Manoj, Yuen See and Stanley is nowhere to be seen.

Damn, it started to drizzle just before the start. Can feel raindrop started falling and I afraid that we need to run in heavy rain for 1 hour. Luckily, the rain did not turn into a heavy rain like last week NUS Run. For the whole run, it was basically a cooling run, cloudy, no sun and if it rain, it was just a drizzle.

Off we go at 0730 hrs. The starting 2km (Loyang Ave, Loyang Way) was basically down slope all the way which enable me to run at about 5:30 pace. After that, it was basically a series of up and down slope for the rest of the run. A lot of space to run since there is at least 1 lane closure during the race. There are 3 to 4 water points scatter around the whole 10km route.

Nearly the end after entering the Prison complex (about 2km to go), we need to circle the big field, it was also a long down slope most of way which will give a good timing. End up crossing the finishing line under 1 hour the first time.
It was basically due to
1) cooling run
2) distance shorter than actual 10km. my polar show 9.96km while it usually show 10.3km for a 10k run. My colleague polar GPS show about 9.6km.
3) ample space to run
4) starting point and ending point not the same and i have a feeling that there are more down slope than up slope.

After finishing,
1) collect goodies bag.
2) collect f&b bag.
4) drank 4 cups of milo (milo van is there)
5) ate 1 banana from the f&b bag
6) ate 2 small cups of anderson ice-cream (chocolate chip), free, first time free ice cream for a run

Waited for the rest to come back and took the customary group photos.
Now the problem of going back to expo.
Either join the long queue and wait for the shuttle bus back to expo OR take taxi outside OR walk back to expo. In the end, i suggest to walk back to expo as I think that the distance is not very far. In reality, the distance from the prison complex to expo is almost 2-3km. So end up the Kok Meng, Stanley, Yuen See and me took about 20 minutes to walk back. Luckily we managed to reach expo before the rain became heavier.

Took breakfast at the expo and went home after that.
Damage for parking is $9. Around 0630 hrs to 1100 hrs.

In summary, a good race and hope they organise again next year.

Official result released just 1 day later.
